Ethical Challenges in a Global Society: How Can Universities Lead?
It isn't often that people get to work together in small groups with knowledgeable leaders. The 80 participants at the 2006 Summit Conference had such an opportunity. The Summit, held at the KSU Center in April 2006, provided a forum to explore ethical challenges facing leaders in the 21st Century and to consider how those in higher education might better prepare their students to meet those challenges.
Dr. Beheruz Setha, President of the University of West Georgia, Professor of Business Administration, and a participant of the 2005 Oxford Conclave, presented the Summit’s Blackwell Lecture. He discussed global trends in the 21st Century and their implications for higher education. Dr. Setha posed questions on population, resources, technology, information, integration, conflict, and governance. Participants explored the topics in roundtable discussions following the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) 7 Revolutions format. Dr. John Knapp facilitated the discussions and gave a plenary session.
Dr. William Sederburg, President of Utah Valley State College, presented a thought provoking address on "Restoring Civility on Campus and in the World” as a panel discussion. This discussion, facilitated by Dr. Greg Weisenstein, Provost and Vice President, Academic Affairs, University of North Dakota, also included Ms. Ann Helm, Executive Director, Center for International Services, City University of New York, Staten Island , and Mr. Brian Wooten, Director of the Center for Student Leadership, Kennesaw State University . Each of these leaders responded to the ideas and perspectives generated by the conference's participants and provided insights gleaned by their participation at the Oxford Conclave.
