(MAY 30) - KSU Executive MBA graduate Candace Long, Founder of the Creativity Training Institute, is partnering with the Siegel Institute to offer a career development seminar, "Journey to the Center of You." June 12 will be the first of a series of similar seminars. The June 12 seminar is a self-discovery event designed to examine the stages you go through in finding your unique calling. This will be about unlocking YOUR creativity, YOUR gifts and talents, and finding the unique purpose for which YOU were created. (MAY 30) - Now in its second semester of enrollment, the Siegel Institute's new Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Ethics is moving full steam ahead with excellent student registration in this summer's two online courses: ILEC 8800 Foundations of Ethics and ILEC 8810 Foundations of Leadership. This Graduate Certificate is offered in two formats: Option #1 - The Partner Program - You enroll in a master's degree with one of nine partner programs at KSU. You complete six hours of specific master's level courses from your degree program plus nine hours of ILEC courses. Option #1, The Exclusive Certificate - You enroll in the Siegel Institute's Graduate Certificate without simultaneously enrolling in a master's degree, and complete 15 credit hours of ILEC courses. You simply apply through the KSU Graduate School for admission to this certificate. Right here at KSU, it is the only program of its kind at the master's degree level in the southeastern United States. (MAY 30) - The Siegel Institute has launched several new personal and professional development programs. This includes two upcoming two-day seminars for workplace solutions. On June 19-20, Dr. Lois Robley will lead "Challenges of Ethics in the Workplace: Ethical Decision-Making." On August 27-28, Dr. Tom Creely will lead "Developing and Building an Ethical Culture." On May 19, the Institute launched its nine-week online Ethical Leadership Professional Development Certificate, with the option to enroll for three-week modules. (MAY 28) - CEO of Northside Hospital Cherokee, Billy Hayes, was the featured speaker in the Why Leadership and Ethics Matter Speaker Series event Tuesday, May 27 at the KSU Center. Hayes shared his philosophies as a health care leader, the challenges he faces, and his plans for expansion. Since Hayes assumed his leadership role of the hospital in 2004, Northside Cherokee has seen tremendous growth including a doubling of physicians and service lines, a 100% increase in revenue, and recognition by the Georgia Hospital Assocation with the Top Care Hospital Award. Hayes is a KSU Alumni of the Executive MBA, and is actively engaged in community leadership, including the YMCA, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and serves on the boards of the Coles College of Business and the Siegel Institute.

(April 23) - American sports icon Bill Curry spoke to a crowd of nearly 250 KSU and community members at a Siegel Institute event Monday, April 21 at the KSU Student Center. He shared stories of his career as a college and NFL athlete which shaped his leadership development and personal values. Curry explored five characteristics of great leaders by sharing personal stories and illustrations exemplifying each characteristic: singleness of purpose; unselfishness; toughness; being smart; never quit or give in. Curry was featured at this event in the Siegel Institute's Why Leadership and Ethics Matter Speaker Series.

(April 30) - Change or Die? This provocative question served as the keynote topic for the Georgia Coach Association PRISM 2008 Awards and Conference April 29, 2008. The conference was for executives looking for ways to maximize the performance of their leaders and teams, especially human resources and organizational development professionals. Dr. Deborah Roebuck and Art Shirk led a beakout session on "Workplace Solutions: Strategies for Growing Your Leaders, Teams, and Organizations" focused on how to implement coaching within your organization to enable the team members to get work done as well as to integrate and sustain on the job learning. It l also examined factors that hinder or support organizational coaching from taking root. Featured as a client of the Siegel Institute that completed a customized Ethical Leadership Training program was Northside Hospital Cherokee CEO Billy Hayes, and two of his leadership team members, Cindy Foust and Fred Brinkman. Siegel Institute served as a sponsor for the PRISM Awards event. The PRISM Awards and conference was held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. (April 22 ) -
Stellenbosch Seboka on Higher Education and Ethical Leadership: Global Perspectives in a Southern African Context--Dr. Betty Siegel, Distinguished Chair of the Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics & Character, is in Stellenbosch, South Africa, preparing for the upcoming Stellenbosch Seboka on Higher Education and Ethical Leadership: Global Perspectives in a Southern African Context. The Seboka will be held April 23-25 near Cape Town. Speakers at the Seboka include Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, former South Africa Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson, Ms. Frances Hesselbein of the Leader to Leader Institute, Ms. Geneva Johnson (former president and CEO of Family Service America), Dr. Betty Siegel, Dr. John Knapp and others.

The Seboka will focus on the practical contributions universities can make towards developing ethical and socially responsible leaders for Africa. The Seboka, a Sesotho word meaning a group of people meeting for a common cause, is a joint effort of three universities: Stellenbosch University, Kennesaw State University and Georgia State University. It is modeled on the three Oxford Conclaves Dr. Siegel initiated, two at Oxford, England and one at Sundance, Utah. As a visiting scholar, Dr. Betty Siegel spent three months in 2007 at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, consulting on Ethical Leadership and the First Year Experience. Out of this experience was developed the Stellenbosch Seboka.

(April 18) - The Siegel Institute was honored to serve the Better Business Bureau as they hosted their annual Torch Awards April 17 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza. Deborah Roebuck served as one of six judges for the award categories of Marketplace Ethics, Customer Service and Community Service. Keynote speaker Ambassador Andrew Young shared significant points about character taking precedence in one's life over fame and wealth. (April 9) - International executive Kent "Oz" Nelson spoke at the Why Leadership and Ethics Matter event held by the Siegel Institute at KSU Tuesday, April 8. Now the retired CEO of UPS, Nelson talked on "Branding High Ethics Into Your Organization and Yourself," covering stories from his UPS years as well as serving on boards of the CDC and United Way. He said that "News about business leaders today brings disappointments daily that make us scratch our heads," making "ethical business" seem like an oxymoron. He stressed that in today's global marketplace, only companies with ethical leadership will experience long-term sustainability. Instantaneous global communication is leveling our global economic field, giving entrepreneurs unprecendented ability to expand. "This is the era of the individual," Nelson said. "Ethical leadership is the most important element now for sustainable, successful business."

(April 5) - Nearly 200 women convened at the 8th Annual Phenomenal Women's Conference hold by the Siegel Institute Thursday, April 3 at the Kennesaw State University Center. Opening keynote speaker Peggy McCormick, President of the Atlanta Development Authority, shared five points about economic empowerment as the basis for every woman's life. Twelve speakers led concurrent sessions in tracks of leadership, ethics, and character on topics relevant to the economic advancement of women. Closing keynote speaker Sandra Hofmann left women in stitches from laughing over stories Sandra shared about women's personal journey in leadership. Following the conference, the 1st Annual Gala Phenomenal Women Awards Celebration honored three winners and two finalists in the categories of Leadership, Ethics, and Character. Winners were: Phenomenal Woman of Ethics Lynn Chastain, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Chick-fil-A; Phenomenal Woman of Leadership Jacqueline Welch, Vice President for Employee and Organizational Effectiveness, Rock-Tenn Company; and Phenomenal Woman of Charactor Miriam Boeri, Assistant Professor of Sociology, Kennesaw State University. Deborah Schwartz Griffin, Vice President of the Georgia Restaurant Association, emcee'd the gala awards dinner. Award-winning songwriter Candace Long entertained the audience with a number from one of her musicals. Ms. Elisabeth Williams Omilami, Director of Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless and winner of the 2007 Phenomenal Woman Award, , was unable to attend to present the awards but a representative of the organization shared a message on her behalf. Half of the proceeds of the gala dinner are being donated to Ms. Omilami's organization.

(March 23) - Dr. Deborah Roebuck served as the keynote speaker at an international human resources conference in Romania, March 19, 2008. She gave three presentations throughout the conference and focused on what businesses can do to retain the talent The conference was held at the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, Sala Constanta, Romania.The conference was attended by business leaders from Eastern Europe. (March 7) - Dr. Deborah Roebuck was a guest speaker at the National League of American Pen Women's Georgia state convention, "Understanding & Nurturing the Creative Spirit" on Wednesday, March 12. (March 5) - Dr. Betty Siegel presented the Woman of the Year Award in Philanthropy to Dr. Bobbie Bailey at the Atlanta Woman Magazine "Woman of the Year & Fan Male 2008 Awards" Wednesday, March 5. This year's award celebration was held at the Atlanta History Center in the Overlook Ballroom from 11:15 am - 1:30pm.

(March 15) - March brought us Women's History Month and the celebration of International Women's Day. On March 11, Siegel Institute was honored to host Deborah Richardson, CEO of Atlanta Women's Foundation, as guest speaker. Atlanta Women's Foundation is the only public foundation in Georgia with a mission to promote positive social change on behalf of women and girls. Ms. Richardson spoke on, "The Evolution of Women's Leadership and Today's Challenges." She is a nationally recognized advocate for ending child exploitation. With Dr. Nancy Boxhill, she co-authored Ending Sex Trafficking of Children in Atlanta. This evening celebrated the courage and determination of women advancing women's rights. Download event flier.

(Feb. 26) - The Siegel Institute is pleased to welcome Ms. Paige Lillard, Vice President fPLillardor Business Excellence at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., to its Advisory Board. At Turner, Ms. Lillard is responsible for the implementation of the Baldrige framework for performance, focusing on excellence in leadership, strategic planning, customer and employee focus, and process management. She is a veteran of the national Board of Examiners governed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the US Secretary of Commerce. Paige holds an MBA from Kennesaw State University, a Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television Communications from Hofstra University and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma national honor society of business schools. She is also a senior member of the American Society for Quality. Paige’s volunteer efforts include her work on the Executive Board of the Georgia Center for Performance Excellence, Time Warner’s “Time to Read” program, the Atlanta Symphony, and a member of Kennesaw State University’s EMBA Executive Board. Paige Lillard is welcomed to the Siegel Institute team.

(Feb. 22) - Dr. Lois Robley was the guest speaker for the Spring 2008 Induction Ceremony of the Alpha Theta Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta on Feb. 22. Lambda Pi Eta is the National Communication Honor Society. Dr.Robley is the Professor of Ethics at the Siegel Institute of KSU. The event was held at the KSU Student Center Leadership and Fireside Rooms, 7:00 pm.

(Feb. 20) - Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General and Asst. Secretary for Health of the United States spoke at KSU Tuesday, Feb. 19 on the role of leadership in the reduction and ultimate elimination of disparities in health. The Siegel Institute was honored to host Dr. Satcher as part of its Why Leadership and Ethics Matter Speaker Series, and as part of KSU's Black History Month Celebration. (Feb. 18) - Siegel Institute executives and faculty gave a presentation at the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics 17th Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas Feb. 21-24, 2008. Dr. Deborah Roebuck, Dr. Thomas Creely, Dr. Lois Robley, and Thomas Pynn, former Fellow for Ethics of the Siegel Institute and co-editor of the Institute's Journal of Ethics in Leadership, prepared the materials for their panel discussion on Leadership Ethics, "Building Ethical Leaders from the Inside Out Around the World."

(Feb. 13) - NCAA coach and NFL player Bill Curry will be coming to KSU by invitation of President Dan Papp April 21 for a campus-wide event where he will speak on "Five Characteristics of Champions." Curry played with the Green Bay Packers, Houston Oilers, Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams. He was the starting Center for the Packers in Super Bowl I and the Colts in Super Bowl V. Curry spent three NFL seasons as Asst. Coach with the Packers, and served as head coach in college football including Georgia Tech, University of Alabama, and University of Kentucky. He is now an ESPN football analyst and Director of the Leadership Baylor program at Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN. He's a Georgia Tech grad in Industrial Management. 5:00 pm, KSU Student Center, University Rooms. Event is free to the campus and community.

(Feb. 12) - The Siegel Institute welcomes Ann Cramer to the Institute's Advisory Board. Ann Cramer is the director of IBM's Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs for North America. Ann has also accepted the invitation to be the keynote speaker for the Siegel Institute's 2009 Phenomenal Women's Conference. Ms. Cramer was recently featured on the cover of Atlanta Woman Magazine when she was named "Power Woman of 2008." "We are all citizens of the world, and as such we should all be there for each other," Ms. Cramer told AWM. Under her guidance, IBM has shown through its people and technology a broad and deep commitment to K-12 education, job training, and employment, community and family services, literacy programs and support for the disabled and disadvantaged (AWM, January 2008). She believes that we must keep establishing an urgency that education is the code of entry, the key to success, the critical link to economic health. Ms. Cramer expends immeasurable energy serving the community including: serving on the Carter Center Board of Councilors, Woodruff Arts Center, Alliance Theatre, Georgia Center for Non-Profits, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, past chair of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, Georgia Chamber's Education Committee, the Workforce Development Task Force for the Governor's Commission for a New Georgia, and more than can be listed here. Ms. Cramer is warmly welcomed to the Siegel Institute Advisory Board team.

(Feb. 11) - The Professional Women's Information Network (ProWIN), has recently invited Dr. Deborah Roebuck to join their board of advisors. ProWIN is a community of influential businesswomen in the metro-Atlanta area--a diverse and accomplished membership organization that serves as a valuable information resource. (Feb. 5) - The Turknett Leadership Group's 5th Annual Leadership Character Awards, co-sponsored by the Siegel Institute and Kennesaw State University, were held Monday, Feb. 4 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Atlanta. Dr. Deborah Roebuck gave a special greeting following the opening of the event. Dr. Betty Siegel presented the Education Award, a new category added this year. (Feb. 3) - Siegel Institute participated in the KSU Graduate School open house on Saturday, Feb. 2. Attendees found out about the Siegel Institute's Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Ethics, and the nine master's degree partner programs to choose from. The open house was held at the KSU Student Center, University Room (ground floor), 9:00 am - 12 noon. (NOV. 9) - Four of Atlanta's best women leaders convened for a panel discussion on "Real, Raw, Relational Power" at the KSU Center Nov. 8. Phyllis Carrera, CEO of HumanArts and author of Journey of My Choosing, moderated the discussion. The panel featured Jacqueline Welch, recipient of the 2007 Women of Excellence Award by Business to Business Magazine, also named as one of Atlanta's 25 Most Powerful Women of 2007 by Atlanta Magazine; CEO of the Edge Connection Patricia Harris, nationally recognized for economic development efforts and awardee of the YWCA of Atlanta's 2007 Academy of Achievement; and President of GH consulting Karen Benjack Glatzer, Advisory Board member for KSU's Executive MBA Program.

(NOV. 2) - Dr. Deborah Roebuck, Executive Director of the Siegel Institute, was the honored recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award presented to her by Hannibal-LaGrange College in Missouri. She graduated from the Class of 1972 where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Business Education, and her Master of Arts in Business Education in 1974.
